National Council met in conjunction with Triangle's Herbert F. Scobie Leadership School in late July.
Among the issues that were discussed were some changes to the national awards that are presented to individuals. Some clarifications were made to the existing awards, and a new award was created -- the Ellison Onizuka Young Alumnus Award. This award shall be presented to members of Triangle within twenty years of their initiation who have received honorable recognition of success in such fields as engineering, architecture, science, education, industry, government, and the like, and by virtue of this having enhanced the prestige of Triangle.
We also discussed the format of the Chapter Performance Awards. Although the fraternity had this year begun a transition to a new way of calculating these awards, Council decided that the new criteria were incomplete and therefore the headquarters staff were unable to make an accurate judgment of the chapters. So for the 2005-06 year we'll keep the old format until the new criteria can be better defined and publicized.
This meeting was the first chance for many Council members to meet new Executive Director Brian Tenclinger. We had some valuable discussions about the future of Triangle and how things will operate, both in the short-term and the long-term. I think everyone emerged from the meeting pleased with our new Executive Director and looking forward to the upcoming months as Brian transitions from his current job. He will be working part-time for Triangle until he reports for full-time duty on September 11.
And, finally, Council discussed a disciplinary issue regarding Councilman Mark Wheatley and some allegations of improper behavior that have been made against him.
Council ultimately decided to schedule a vote to remove him from office. All Council members present, excepting Mark, voted for or otherwise supported this decision. According to the National Bylaws, 30-day advance notice is required before such a vote may be taken, and the final vote was scheduled for a September 20 conference call.
We regret the necessity of taking such an extreme action, but feel that this is necessary to protect Triangle, its members, and the character of our fraternity. If the removal vote passes, more information will be provided to the chapters in accordance with the procedures described in the National Bylaws.
