I apologize for the lack of posts the last few months. As is common over the holidays, Council took a bit of break as everyone tended to family and friends, and then medical issues involving two of the officers also slowed things down a little.
Here's a recap of recent Council actions and discussions:
There were several bits of good news on the expansion front....first off, the Michigan Interest Group petitioned for, and was granted, colony status. There are several requirements to become a colony, including having fifteen members, having various parts of a chapter structure in place, and participating in Triangle and university activities. The next step is reaching full chapter status once again!
Also, the Pitt Interest Group pledged 17 men, a strong step on their way up, and the Houston Interest Group pledged 15 men, another encouraging development. Next fall, we expect to begin recruitment efforts at Oklahoma State University as well.
In mid-February, Council held its annual winter meeting, this time in Mesa, Arizona. For the first time in several years, National Council met in conjunction with Triangle's other two governing boards, the Foundation Board of Directors, and the Building Loan Fund Board of Trustees. Each board met separately, we had one large Cabinet meeting to discuss general fraternity issues, and much informal socializing went on.
Two items of interest from Council's meeting:
We've decided to try something new this year...we're going to replace one printed issue of Triangle Review with an electronic issue, most likely a PDF that will be made available via email and web. This is an experiment to try to reduce costs yet still efficiently communicate with our members on a regular basis. We also plan to make electronic versions of all forthcoming Reviews available on the website.
Also, Council considered a motion to let any interested Triangle members join the National Council email list and follow the discussions that Council members have throughout the year. This would be analogous to the policy for face-to-face Council meetings, which are open to all Triangle members.
After some discussion, Council decided not to make this change at this time, as some members were concerned that open, unfettered Council exchanges might be difficult under such circumstances.
During the Cabinet discussion, Foundation Director Wayne Echelberger directed our attention to the ABET 2000 Criteria, which encourage ABET-accredited engineering schools to create and support programs which will promote the welfare of their students. Many of the goals of this program fit nicely with the goals of Triangle, and Council is making further plans to consider how we can use these criteria to partner with universities and show off Triangle to our best advantage.
