Council decided to support the Oklahoma Chapter's decision not to sign the agreements requested by the university. This decision came following a very long process of implementing new Greek standards at the University of Oklahoma. While the Oklahoma Chapter and National Council agreed with most of the new standards, there were a few items that we did not agree with. Since the chapter house is private property and not owned by the university, we felt that residents and guests of legal age should be allowed to consume alcohol on the premises and should not have to worry about the property being searched upon short notice.
It was made known by the University that if our chapter did not sign the new standards, they would lose their student organization status. National Council told the chapter they would continue to be in good standing with the fraternity if they chose not to sign the documents.
Once the signing deadline passed, the university did indeed withdraw recognition of the chapter as a student organization at OU.
The Council discussion led to careful examination of our current Risk Management Policy (Fraternity Regulation 3.6) and we have decided to make some changes to it in order to provide additional guidance for future chapters and Councils.
